Massive waves. 10m high - gale force winds 8 to 10 and reached 11 at one point. We were traveling at 3.5 knots an hour which is slower than walking pace. 0 degrees C. Impossible to film and virtually impossible to go outside. There’s a 29 degree tilt to the ship - that’s nearly a 60 degree angle we’re changing as the waves come. No way we can get to the South Orkney islands so they’re abandoned so that we can get to the Antarctic peninsula for a little while at least.
Err, is the horizon supposed to be at that angle?
Could not get a GPS signal the entire day. There may be fewer satellites down here but it must be that the weather was too bad to triangulate our position.
We finally figured out we could get out to the top deck all the way from inside the ship! Hooray for us! No more struggling up tiny staircases being blasted by sea spray and gale force winds. We can face that from the moment we emerge at the top with our heavy equipment. I can’t quite believe we’ve been doing that for so long.
A little bit stormy outside. Filming is tricky to say the least
