Ok…maybe hurricane is a slight exaggeration. Yesterday we struggled with the fog for most of the day but the Cape’s famous south-easter wind started blowing in the afternoon.
We’d set aside the afternoon light to try and film what we could at the two hills in the centre of the island. There’s certainly a good view there and it turned out it’s quite popular with penguins.
They’re nesting now as well and many rocks have a pair underneath them. But the wind was too strong and there was no way that Pierre could get a steady shot.
We had to give up in the end and head back for an early supper and some internet trawling. It’s incredible that we’re here on this island in the shell of an old house without water or electricity, yet we can still get onto the internet...and buy things!
So we started today in the usual fashion. Up at dawn to get the sunrise with a cup of coffee. But the wind hasn’t died down at all. It’s a veritable gale out there and there’s no shelter. We went out to the hills again to try our luck with a sheltered spot but were blown backwards wherever we stood.
The gulls seem to like the wind though. They’re all riding the thermals and floating above us.
But we’re going to have to retreat into the houses for now with the pigeons. Perhaps we’ll find a baboon spider in there. That’s a comforting thought.
