Dawn struggle between sun and fog - 04:54 am

05 May 2009

We were in place for the first rays of sunlight to hit the face of Table Mountain this morning but we got more than we bargained for.

A classic fog had rolled in from the ocean and before our eyes the mountains disappeared, reappeared and were transformed. Cold followed with this wet air as well as an all pervading smell of this productive ocean, which easily dominated the subtle perfume given out by the geraniums.

Devil’s Peak summit was the only thing visible for a while. The sea of fog covered Cape Town below us, obscuring it but not the sounds of a city waking.

The recent rains are somehow more noticeable in this gloomy environment - the fog seems to accentuate profiles and reflections.

Bright gold and a subtle pink were spreading through the eastern sky where possible, but the fog beat back the dawn. A great morning for Paul to capture.

The sun would appear for moments looking like the moon - the intense fire taken out of it. Amazing to see it’s full shape without being blinded.

The mountain went through several colour changes as the light changed from half to full light and we had this glorious scene before us for a few minutes before the fog enveloped us entirely and all the mountains were gone.

It seems we’ll be fogged up for a little while so as we were getting slightly chilled we scrambled into Paul’s car and headed for coffee.
