A golden afternoon on the edge of the famous mountain - 01:08 pm

04 May 2009

After a successful morning getting covered in ash on the eastern side of Devil’s Peak, we headed around to the other side to see what the fynbos looked like on the more famous face of the mountain. The light was fantastic and so was the surrounding fynbos. The fire hadn’t raged around here and while this isn’t yet major flower season, the fynbos seems to give off ever-stronger aromatic smells as the evening draws in.

It’s an astonishing place. Every time I come here I can’t help repeating ‘wow’ over and over again in my mind. And the setting happily throws in more drama as you sit and watch.

A common phenomenon as winter draws in is the fog which suddenly appears and pours over ridges and between saddles. Light and visuals change constantly with this.

And when we stopped staring at the fog shapes and looked behind us, a fat waxing moon was rising over Devil’s Peak ridge behind us.

For the grand finale - a dash of gold and rose as the sun dips into the ocean and we’re left wide eyed and happily looking forward to tomorrow’s visual treats.
